Admissions
Connaught Special School is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of students aged 4 to 19 who have a range of learning disabilities. Many of our students are diagnosed with autism, often accompanied by complex sensory and physical needs. A significant number of our students are pre-verbal, and none are following an academic-based curriculum. For many, their next step after attending Connaught will involve transitioning to social care settings.
As part of the Learning in Harmony Academy Trust, Connaught Special School admits only pupils who have been named in the Local Authority (LA) Education, Health, and Care (EHC) Plan or Statement. However, in special circumstances, and with prior agreement from the Local Authorities, an emergency placement may be made on an individual basis while a Statutory Assessment for a plan is in progress.
Admission to the school is open to children and young people with Education, Health, and Care Plans who meet the specific criteria outlined below.

Ability is within the complex profound to severe learning difficulties range. Students require highly specialist and personalised teaching strategies and resources in order to support their learning through making small steps of incremental progress. |
Communication and interaction |
Severe speech and language disorders resulting in very limited or no verbal communication. Students may use a simplified formal communication system eg. Signalong signing, symbols, PECS,switches, a communication aid, or objects of reference, or they may communicate through using facial expressions, gestures, body language, vocalisations, Intensive Interaction and behavioural means, to make their needs known to familiar and trusted adults. |
Social and emotional health and well-being |
Students may face significant vulnerability and social isolation, often struggling with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. They may experience high anxiety levels linked to their learning challenges, which can worsen with the onset of puberty. These students might display a wide range of challenging behaviours, necessitating high staffing ratios and specialised interventions, including support from staff trained in positive behaviour support techniques. |
Physical, sensory and medical |
Students may have highly complex sensory processing and sensory integration needs. |
